Passion and Peace

Vanway Trebles

The Vanway Trebles are regular participants at school Remembrance Day ceremonies, Christmas Concerts, Christmas Nights of Music, Singfest, The Prince George Music Festival, and Fanfare. This year the Vanway Trebles are celebrating their tenth anniversary!

Martyn Joseph

No stranger to Prince George audiences, Martyn Joseph has played before an ever-increasing band of loyal devotees for nearly ten years. Joseph is a Welsh folksinger and songwriter in the storyteller tradition, but without the rage and anguish that often marks the activist musician. To be sure, his lyrics and delivery can be just as passionate as anything by Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan or Pete Seeger, but his gentle, self-deprecating humour and flawless musicianship at once captivate audiences and makes every listener feel as though they are in the presence of a rare and unique commentator on our times. Joseph combines smooth vocals with memorable melodies and sometimes hypnotic rhythms to create whole worlds within his songs and is an experience not to be missed.

Leroy Bell and His Only Friends

Based in Seattle, Leroy Bell’s music, like the man, is hard to pigeon hole; it is at once a blend of funk, soul, pop and folk that can have audiences tapping their feet along with infectious rhythms or sit with rapt attention as Bell seamlessly shifts into a quiet, reflective meditation on peace or love. Bells’ crystal clear vocals are often tinged with a sense of urgency or can take on a plaintive quality. For examples of each, check out Voodoo and Dream of Peace on Bell’s MySpace page (http://myspace.com/leroybell). And the part about his band mates being his only friends? Well, that’s not entirely true, since Bell has written songs for Elton John and has toured with the likes of B.B. King, Etta James, India Arie, Rev. Al Green, LeAnn Rimes and Taj Mahal to name only a few.

Sunday, January 27 - PG Playhouse - 8pm

The second show will surely leave you flushed with a burning desire to dance.

Hot Jazz from the Hot Club of France to Havana

Zapato Negro

Based in Vancouver, Zapato Negro (Spanish for Black Shoe) is comprised of three Cubans, one Montrealer raised in Venezuela and a Vancouver jazz composer/musician. Together they produce an Afro-Cuban style of jazz in what many would regard its truest form. Employing piano, trumpet, bass, drums and percussion, this is free form jazz, where each member of the ensemble plays complex and sophisticated rhythm and melody lines that are ambrosia for the jazz purist.

Van Django

Based in Vancouver, Van Django pays living homage to the spirits of the Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli-inspired Gypsy Jazz made popular in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Played entirely on stringed instruments, there is a definite melodic line, strong underlying rhythms, and several places for the improvisations that make Hot Club of France-style jazz so distinctive and appealing. Each of the four musicians is able to weave their virtuoso performances together into a whole that is far more than the sum of its considerably talented parts, making Van Django a force to be reckoned with.

THE PUCKS
Rock/Folk/Country/Pop originals
7:00 to 9:00 pm

Canada is not a melting pot……it’s a salad. Diverse ingredients from far and wide are routinely tossed together, often creating a brilliant mix. That’s just Canada for you.

Happens all the time.

Maybe that’s the only way to explain how a wilderness guide, a tuba playing small “I” industrialist, and a conservatory trained piano/clarinet player (turned vocalist-percussionist ) could end up in the same band together; (let alone the same room)……but hey-that’s just Canada. Work smart with what your dealt….and always remember, you don’t need to polish gold

That’s “the pucks”

Shine On The Light Fantastic

Leela Gilday Band

Winner of the 2007 Western Canada Music Award for Outstanding Aboriginal Recording, Leela Gilday is an independent Dene artist from the Northwest Territories whose songs transcend time, place and ethnicity. While her work very definitely emerges from an aboriginal perspective, her themes are universally appealing and strike a resonant chord with anyone who has ever examined the nuances of living a thoughtful life. Blessed with a clear, sweet voice and impeccable vocal phrasing, Gilday’s music is both throught provoking and inspiring.

Cara Luft with Hugh MacMillan

A darling of the indie music press, Cara Luft has a richly deserved reputation as a triple threat; she is a sophisticated and accomplished guitarist who employs several kinds of tunings, she is a wonderfully lyrical songwriter and owns one of the most distinctive and rich vocal abilities anywhere. Surrounded, some may say soaked, in folk music her whole life, Luft lives for performing and is even better live than on record. For this concert, she will be accompanied by Hugh MacMillan, long time multi-instrumentalist for Spirit of the West.

Red Hot and Rockin'

Spirit of the West

Now entering the 25th year of its various incarnations, Spirit of The West has produced twelve well-received albums over that time, with four going gold and two earning platinum status. The group has toured extensively from the beginning, through Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Europe and enjoys a worldwide base of passionate (some might say obsessive) fans.

Their music is a blend of traditional indie folk with a huge dose of celtic cadences and rhythms skilfully woven through their charming and engaging melodies. Always supremely professional, SOTW meshes energetic musicianship with humour and verve.

The Cruzeros

The Kelowna-based Cruzeros have spent over a decade perfecting their blend of country rock with an occasional touches of bluegrass and Mexican son tossed in. Displaying flawless musicianship and mellow, often plaintive vocals, the Cruzeros are gritty at times, and at others pensive and reflective. Their almost entirely original lyrics are evocative and conjure up memories of love, both lost and found. Touring the U.S., Mexico and Canada, the Juno-nominated Cruzeros are sure have everybody on their feet.

A night full of up and coming artists - These are the faces to watch in the future.

The Big Indie

Maurice

Hailing from Victoria, B.C., the four man ensemble known as Maurice produces an alternative form of indie rock that is sometimes tinged with jazz influences and at others by a more art house feel. Maurice lays down complex rhythms overlain with stark vocals and spare, sometimes hypnotic instrumental breaks. Maurice has just released its first album and is currently embarking on an extensive tour of western Canada. Their passionate commitment to their music will delight audiences everywhere.

Said the Whale

Vancouver-based Said the Whale is a quintet of twenty-somethings whose lyrical observations reflect the hopes, the dreams and the the potential of being that age. The music is deceptively spare, stripped down to basic rock elements; guitar, drums, bass, keyboard and vocals and older listeners will be reminded of the early Kinks in both the musicianship and the vocal stylings. A popular act with indie rock fans in the Lower Mainland, Said the Whale is currently in the midst of a Canadian tour that takes them as far as Toronto.

Dan Mangan

Since falling in love with music as a child, Vancouver folk artist Dan Mangan has become a sublimely accomplished guitarist and writer whose songs are mood pieces, creating whole worlds that are internally consistent, compelling and complete. His seductive vocals show off a compelling voice that is often brooding, sometimes sad, but always like warm honey sliding over fine gained sandpaper. Mangan has won fans through touring the US, the UK and Australia and is critically acclaimed for his pure professionalism.

Melissa McLelland

Melissa McLelland's recent album, Thumbelina's One Night Stand, has received virtually unanimous critical acclaim, both for the quality of her vocal performance and for its eclectic mix of folk, pop, jazz and blues. With a voice that is reminiscent of the two Sarahs, Harmer and McLachlan, McLelland employs her dazzling vocal ability to sing songs of love in all its heart breaking and heart warming aspects. Whether alone with her guitar or in front of esteemed back up musicians such as McLachlan and Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo), McLelland is simply a delight.

Cara Luft

Strumming since the age of four and singing since she can remember, Cara Luft brings a welcoming wit, ease and grace to the stage seldom seen in this age of fast fame and virtual presence.

Spending those first crucial nine months bathed in the resonant thump of her mother's Martin D-18, she was raised in a house and community vibrant with folk music and musicians. These roots inform and charge Cara's musical being, and underscore her depth and commitment to music, to song, and to the vital sharing of these gifts through soulful performances.

A powerfully elegant guitarist, Cara is a maven of open tunings, branching out into mandolin and clawhammer banjo. Her writing is a blend of social commentary, imagination and rhythmic intensity, her distinctive voice penetrates to the core. In performance she balances pathos with joy, telling hilarious stories between songs.
