All artists for Coldsnap 2008 are now booked!
The Festival Booking Process
For past festival bookings I have a list throughout the year on the go, a list that far exceeds the number of artists I can realistically program. I keep some spaces open as I come across new music all the time through many sources. For the approximately 12 [2008] mainstage spots open that actually represents for me hundreds of checks on individual artists and bands in addition to the artists who have formally applied. In the search for new artists I have had the good fortune to have worked with many artists for many years and I have a long data base of established performers. I also consult and collaborate with other festival ad's and promoters re joint touring efforts. It is our hope that as the festival grows so will our budget and available programming spots. There are hundreds of artists, from our region, nationally and beyond, that are ready to perform at our festival already. Booking is an exciting but daunting process.
In the complicated booking process, time is of an essence as artists themselves arrange and wangle routing performances. I wish I could book all the wonderful artists I come across but I can't. When I come across a potential artist I use a variety of means to check up on them. I try hard to mix genres but each year some are highlighted more than others.
I try to encompass local artists as much as I can. In Prince George itself we are blessed with many musicians and most want to play and I can only please a few! The Coldsnap Festival 2008 will see 7 local venues on board to support local artists. From Monday Jan 28th, Tuesday, Jan 29th and Wednesday Jan 30th these venues will host approximately 16 local artists/bands. At Cafe Voltaire an open stage will welcome any artist to sign up for a max of 3 songs on each of these nights from 7-9pm. For 2009 I will lead a committee who will take on the job for selecting local artists.
Local artists who have not played outside Prince George need to understand that we have tried really hard these past 5 years to create an international event for our city and region and that support for this idea is welcomed and much appreciated. One thing I know...we can't please everyone! I encourage local artists to check out performing at other festivals and gain some travelling experience. It sure helps in having an appreciation for what we are endeavouring to do here.
We also present shows in the year and booking happens there too.
Who do I book for mainstage Coldsnap concerts?
I aim to put together a wide ranging program that might well include each year: world music, mainly alt country, rockabilly, indie alternative, jazz, blues, bluegrass, celtic, contemporary and traditional folk, spoken word, hip-hop, pop and modern rock artists.
I am looking mostly for strong, charismatic touring artists, also for emerging artists who have that "buzz" happening about their music who are on the cusp of "making it" in the music industry.
Official Booking, May 1 to June 30, 2008
